Another fast start for UConn? Hell no!

After an impressive 11-0 start to the 2006-07 season, the Connecticut Huskies looked like a promising young team.

UConn covered large spreads with ease and lost only one of its first 11 against the spread.

Then the real season began; the Big East season. The first 11 games of this schedule the Huskies went 2-9 ATS, a far cry from what seemed to be a team smacking critics in the face for saying it was a rebuilding year.

I apologize now to college hoops experts for saying an impressive 11-0 run earlier, since their most impressive foe during this run was SMU, maybe Pepperdine. The dogs from Storrs played all 11 games at home, not exactly a usual UConn schedule.

Well this year Jim Calhoun has vowed to take a different approach, not a “Jim Boeheim” schedule as he put it in a light-hearted press conference. The Huskies could possibly face tough squads like Memphis, Oklahoma, even Kentucky in their quest to win the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic. After that comes a few cupcake games, but December sees UConn playing Gonzaga and Central Florida, two possible slip-ups.

I wonder with another year under their belt, and A.J. Price playing like he should have last year, can the Huskies, who went 3-12 ATS in their last fifteen last season, shock oddsmakers with a few wins?

The smart bettor in me is telling me to stay away from betting on a UConn game until I have seen 10-15 games already. But I have to wonder, will oddsmakers be clouded by the Huskies’ horrible finish last year and tag them with huge underdog numbers when they are playing decent teams?

I will definitely be keeping a close eye on their first couple of spreads during the 2K Classic. UConn plays Morgan State in its first game Wednesday.
